What kind of results can I expect from working with Jennifer?

You will

  • gain clarity
  • define goals based on your core values
  • identify obstacles and best approach for dealing with them
  • replace limiting beliefs with notions that work
  • uncover habits that don’t serve you and develop alternatives that move you towards your goals
  • learn how to release fear, anxiety, doubt, and procrastination
  • always know your “next step”
  • become more confident and productive in your work and personal life
  • have weekly access to an accountability partner to keep you moving forward

How long do I do counseling (or coaching)?

The real answer is it varies. Often, clients achieve best results from weekly or twice monthly sessions over a 90-day period to change habits, achieve goals, and become confident in lasting change. After initial goals are met, clients often change to monthly check-ins to retain results. Clients always know when they are “done,” and you will, too.

How does Life Coaching work?

It’s like having a personal trainer for your mind! I ask the right questions to help you uncover your core values. I’m a good listener, but I’m also very skilled at hearing what you’re not saying. I help you see what you don’t see on your own in a nonjudgmental, caring, and respectful environment. I assist you in structuring next steps to reach your goals. I am your accountability partner to keep you focused.

What is the difference between counseling and coaching?

Counseling and coaching utilize similar skills on the part of the professional but also have some key differences. Let’s break that down.

Counselors and coaches both listen intently to their clients and ask questions that hopefully move them to new insights about their situation and courses of action. Both types of practitioner should be highly empathetic – interested in understanding what is going on in a completely nonjudgmental way. Read more & see chart

Where do you see clients?

Counseling sessions are held in the office at 20823 N. Main Street, Cornelius, NC 28031. Coaching sessions can also be held via Skype or FaceTime, so you can conveniently attend from anywhere in the world where you can focus and not be disturbed. I currently see clients from their offices, relaxed in their favorite chair, sitting cross-legged on their bedroom floor, or sitting in their car on a lunch break! Local clients may also come to my office.

Can I use my insurance?

Counseling clients – I do not currently accept insurance. I am happy to provide a receipt that you may file for out of network benefits on request. I strongly encourage you to consider not using insurance and paying what you can afford on the sliding scale above. In both my personal and professional experience, I have found: anything you tell a health care professional can become part of your permanent record via medical notes/history. Companies will ask you for the right to review these records when you apply for future health or life insurance. In addition, health insurance companies often ask therapists to continually validate whether clients qualify for ongoing services, and for clients to complete surveys. While treatment efficacy is important, do you really want an insurance company deciding this for you or do you want to decide?
You may be able to use your health savings account, depending on the specifics of your plan. Clients are responsible for knowing plan details and using appropriately.

What kinds of people do you work with?

I work with clients from all walks and stages of life: men and women -professionals, students, parents, those seeking life partners, those learning to enjoy independence. I assist people in career transition or seeking to re-ignite passion at work, but my most common area of focus is RELATIONSHIPS. Our lives truly consist of the relationships we form both in our personal and work lives; relationships form the environment we navigate. They can either
energize us or drain us.

Common issues addressed:

I work with clients to

  • set healthy boundaries, to practice assertiveness, and by doing so, to experience self-respect and self-compassion
  • develop the skills needed to experience true intimacy, sometimes for the first time or at a whole new level
  • learn skills to manage anxiety or depression to live a better life
  • focus on what they can control and go through a process that results in intentional choices that reflect their core values

I have greatest success with clients who

  • are willing to look deeply at themselves and others around them and do the work of “sorting the laundry” – what belongs to me and what belongs to others
  • are committed to taking action that leads to a more productive, meaningful, and satisfying life
  • desire greater connection in their relationships or more passion in their work life

What makes you unique?

My background and training allow me to take an eclectic approach based on the needs of the individual. My approach is:

  • Holistic- Honoring that mind, body, and spirit are connected and part of one system that composes each unique individual. What we think affects how we feel and vice versa. How we treat our bodies affects how we feel. What we choose to believe about ourselves and the world ultimately affects our action. Any plan for our “best life” has to address all areas.
  • Narrative- What story are we telling ourselves about our current situation? What do we tell ourselves about our future? Part of effective work is investigating these narratives for truth.
  • Somatic- Analyzing our narratives for truth is necessary but in my experience often not sufficient for lasting change. It’s not enough to accept something at the cognitive level because research on decision-making shows that choices are generally made from our emotional core. We are intelligent enough to rationalize whatever is most important to us emotionally. To believe something, to trust it enough to live it our, we need to create “felt experience” in the body. This creates a concrete memory that says “I know this is true because I experienced it in my own body.”
